Wesley's
Cigar Dinner
The
Grillhouse,
Rosebank, Jhb
June 19, 2003
.
..
The
evening was
an
unqualified success.
The
seasonal "flu" took its toll, leading to a few last
minute cancellations which were quickly taken up by those on the
waiting list. The final count was 68 and with some imaginative
re-arranging of the tables we were able to seat all groups and
parties to their satisfaction.
The spicy,
unusually-shaped, Hajenius Kleine
Tuitknak was an ideal opening cigar. It had the
guests talking positively about short filler cigars - especially
some ladies who took the cigar tentatively saying they didn't
really smoke cigars.
The Cohiba Siglo II smoked up to its reputation
- superb!
The San Cristobal La Fuerza was practically unknown
to most of the guests, but will now, I think, be included in many
personal selections. Because of its length, it could fall into
the category of Corona Extra (Ringsize 46 x 143mm), but at Ringsize
50 x 140mm it should probably be defined as a long Robusto (classic
dimensions 50 x 129mm) or short Double Corona. The extra thickness
gave a cool, mellow smoke, and the extra 14mm provided more time
in which to enjoy it.
On the food
side, the Calamari from the Falklands, which several at our table
ordered, was agreed to be some of the best we had ever eaten.
Going round the tables later, it was obvious that everybody was
happy with their food selections and the quality of the service.
Not surprising - The Grillhouse has a fine reputation.
As before, the wonderfully efficient air extraction system allowed
us all to enjoy the aroma of good cigars without being overwhelmed.
If
you missed the dinner, you can still experience the cigars:
From July 10 to July 23 we
are offering the Dinner Selection at R215.00 per pack of
3.

Due to the
good response to the evening, 3 lucky people (instead of the promised
2) went home with beautiful crystal cigar ashtrays. The winner
of the "surprise" prize - a Spanish
leather cigar case containing 3 Cuban Churchill cigars (total
value R1300) couldn't believe his luck, but will certainly appreciate
it.
A random poll resulted in October being identified as the month
suitable for the next dinner, with Thursday, 23rd as the possible
date. Watch the website for details closer to the time.
If
you receive the regular e-mails from us notifying you of the fortnightly
specials - watch out for the next one - a mouth-watering discount
on selected boxes of Cuban cigars will be attached.
If you aren't on our database, e-mail
us for the list. You can choose whether to receive details of
this offer only, cigar dinners only, future cigar offers only
- whatever suits you.

Savinelli
Dry System
- for the new Pipe Smoker
I
am often asked the question: "Which is the best pipe for
a new pipe smoker?"
Provided
it fits the budget, and there is no objection to a bent pipe (this
is a very personal preference) - my answer has to be the Savinelli
Dry System pipe.
The design
evolved over many years (it took 4 years for Savinelli to develop
the mouthpiece alone), and much thought went into it, including
in-depth research into the negative points of existing system
pipes, in order to improve on them; considering the balance
(only certain shapes would be suitable), the technical side (taking
into account the engineering possibilities), the materials for
mouthpiece and band, the aesthetics.
The resulting
benefits are:
1. The pipe is very light on the teeth;
2. It has a built-in moisture trap;
3. The use of the optional balsa insert mops up any excess moisture
without changing the taste;
4. The peg-fitting mouthpiece won't twist off in the pocket;
5. The large smoke hole on the top of the mouthpiece allows the
smoke to leave in an even spread, and not directly onto the tongue;
its size makes it easy to clean and spreads the flavour in the
mouth. Its position makes it difficult for juices to enter the
stem from the mouth.
6. The metal band prevents the shank from swelling and cracking
if there is too much moisture in the trap (for example, if the
balsa is not used).
To
date we have offered the Dry System in 5 shapes.
Now, after a recent visit to the Savinelli offices in
Milan, we introduce a new shape #1641 in a smooth, brown
polished finish.
54-SavPolEx1641
The size is "Extraordinaire"
The price is R795.00
|
 |
As
an introductory offer, from July 24 to August 6, we offer
25% off this new shape -
bought through any Wesley's shop
or via Safeshop
-
limited to the first 18 pipes!
A good opportunity for you to try the Dry System,
or to add this shape to your present collection.

Prestige
Pipes
In
November 2001, we
described Prestige
Pipes
in the following manner:
A Prestige Pipe is made from well-aged briar, confirmed
by the good hard grain displayed on the surface of the bowl. Degrees
of close, tight Straight or Bird's Eye grains are the norm. The
bowl is either flawless or only slightly specked.
As these bowls are identified in the process of manufacture, they
are ear-marked for special attention. Each manufacturer has his
closely-guarded secret processes to enhance the beauty and smoking
qualities of these chosen pieces - fine sanding, repeated staining
and polishing, deep sandblasting, treatment with heat and special
oils.
A Prestige Pipe may undergo as many as 30 finishing operations
and can take over 2 months to complete.
All these will do wonders, but they take time and great skill,
and are very costly.
(See Manufacture of Briar
Pipes - Finishing; and "Pipes
- what's in a good brand name?")
Earlier this
year we visited Savinelli Pipes in Milan and together with Roberto
Pomé, the Export Manager, we selected some Punto Oro Fumée
pipes from those they had available at the time (and one "Pipe
of the Year 2003").
The pipes have duly arrived and are just as lovely as we remembered
them. You can see them on the website: "Prestige
Pipes".
There are only 7 pipes available through the Webshop.
Each pipe is unique, and the pipe you see on the website is the
pipe you would receive. (It is not a sample from a group.) If
you buy one and on receipt you feel that our camera has exaggerated
its beauty you may return it to us for a full refund including
return postage - no questions asked.
From
August 21 to September 3, 2003 we will offer Prestige pipes
at a 25% discount.
Savinelli Punto Oro Fumée, Champagne, Straight Grain,
Collection 2003.
7 are pictured on the website - the remaining few are at
the Wesley's Shops.

Are
they worth the price?
The demand for Prestige Pipes is testimony to the fact that they
are appreciated for their rarity, beauty of the grain and smoking
quality.
They are always in short supply - testing the integrity of the
manufacturer.
A top quality manufacturer will not lower his standards.

The
Business of Cigars
During
the boom years of
the
mid-1990s the demand
for Cuban cigars became
so great, and Cuba was so desperate
for dollars, that quality
control gave way to quantity mania. The situation was becoming
disastrous - one of the great luxuries of the world, and a symbol
of success, was falling to pieces. This could threaten the whole
cigar industry. If the pinnacle of the industry deteriorates,
there is nothing to which we can aspire, and everything stagnates
or goes backwards. Something had to be done.
Two major Cuban cigar players, outside of Cuba, SEITA in France
and Tabacalera of Spain, formed a company called Altadis which
bought 50% of Habanos - the marketing arm of Cuba Tobacco. This
gave financial stability to Cuba Tobacco, and access to new equipment,
packaging and even new factories.
We first
saw the influence and benefit of the Altadis investment with the
emergence of all the new Cuban
cigarillos. Now there are further signs with introduction
of larger machine-made cigars. Coming out of a new factory, with
all bright new machinery is the brand "Guantanamera".
It is named after the song written in 1928 by the Cuban singer
and songwriter, Joseito Fernandez - which became internationally
popular in the 1960s.
These are
by no means large cigars, ring sizes
range from 29 to 41 and length from 106mm to 150mm - but they
do offer a good introduction to the distinctive Cuban taste. At
these ring sizes the short filler, which comes from the Vuelta
Arriba region better known for supplying tobacco for European
cigars, is ideal as it gives an easy, mostly consistent draw.
On the cigars I've seen, the wrapper is finer than that on some
of the older machine-made cigars - no lumps and bruises or thick
veins.
From a marketing point of view, the packaging is also good. Cristales,
the largest, is plastic tubed and offered in 5's and 25's. Each
of the smaller cigars is cellophane wrapped and packed in 5's
or 10's.
To top it all, each cigar is pre-cut - ready to light and smoke.
My
experience: I smoked the "Compay". It burnt a little
unevenly at first, but soon settled down giving me a pleasant
25 minute smoke. The taste was deliciously spicy Cuban.
From
September 4 to September 17, 2003 we will be offering
a
3-pack of Guantanamera cigars for only R99.95
Cristales
- Length 150 mm; Ringsize 41
Compay - Length 123 mm; Ringsize 40
Decimos - Length 134 mm; Ringsize 38
Try
them. What do you think?

Preserving
your Pipe
-
the practical, everyday
side.
A friendship
from
Day 1 to forever.
Day 1
- The time to baptise the pipe you carefully selected from your
pipe shop. Hold it in your hand, look at it, anticipate the pleasure
you are going to experience together. Look on it as you would
somebody you have just met, and intend to make a friend of. Treat
your new pipe with care and respect.
Don't rush the process; patience at this stage is vital to the
friendship. A poorly carbonned bowl will not smoke to its full
potential and may have a short life. Protect it!
If you're a new smoker, ask for a free copy of "The Complete
Pipe Smoker" from your nearest Wesley's and read it while
you relax (or print it from the website).
When you've finished the first probably fairly brief smoke, start
as you mean to go on - slip in a pipe cleaner and rest the pipe
bowl down in a rack (see Care).
Smoke one of your other pipes till tomorrow.
Days 2 to 3 or 6 - continue as on Day 1, gradually building
up the carbon layer till the bowl is fully protected.
Days "from
then on to plenty" - Always bear in mind the old maxim
"the cleaner and drier you keep your pipe the nicer it will
be to smoke". From the very first smoke, adopt the habit
of going through the basic cleaning and drying up procedures at
the end of each smoke. Don't be shy with your pipe cleaners, and
remember to use a "Bristle" cleaner and cleaning liquid
through the shank at regular intervals. But don't be over-enthusiastic.
Reckless cleaning can cause
burn out!
"Pipe
Cleaners" are another story. Who would have thought such
a variety was necessary?
But there is something for everyone and for every pipe:
Standard (made in the UK) - fine wire to fit most pipes, using
quality cotton that doesn't disintegrate;
Standard (Far East) - tapered to make it easier to insert;
Extra thick (UK) - a dense cotton cleaner for added absorption,
especially through the shank;
Bristle (UK) - nylon bristles are interspersed for extra cleaning
power;
Extra thin (UK) - some pipes need them, particularly full bents;
Coloured (UK) - less likely to leave bits of lint behind - and
for children and decorations too.
During these
days all is well with you and your pipe, but be observant. It
may be building up for a proper "Ream
& Clean" service. Without the correct tools, this
can be both hard work and dangerous to your pipe. A sharp knife,
round file or drill bit can ruin the relationship.
If all this reaming and cleaning will be more of a chore than
an act of friendship, bring the pipes to us and we will have them
expertly restored for a
modest sum. You'll hardly recognise the glowing beauty that is
returned to you, and the sweet taste of the first smoke will bring
a reminiscent smile to your face.
So
with care and consideration, the friendship between man and briar
can begin, grow and mature over many years.
I like to dwell on the thought.

Short
Filler.in
larger "Premium" cigars
.-
does it work?
The
terms "short filler",
"machine made", are normally associated with small cigars
or cigarillos. But this is not the full picture.
There are larger cigars made in this way, and with excellent results.
Although
the maximum Ringsize appears to be limited to about 42 - the blend
can still be designed to be full flavoured, with a wide variety
of carefully selected complementary tobaccos combined together
into a homogeneous whole for a complex yet subtle taste experience
and a consistently easy draw, at a relatively modest price.
They offer an advantage over their long filler counterparts, where
only the best quality and highest paid rollers must be used to
achieve the consistency of a good draw; and only the larger, more
expensive ring sizes in long filler cigars offer the same complexity
of flavour.
The
term "Premium Cigar" is also misleading, because it
is usually only associated with handmade, long filler cigars.
(As an aside, this term appears to have originated in the United
States, and for many years it was said in the cigar world that
"you can't sell short filler cigars to the Americans because
the cigars come to pieces when they chew them".)
Not
all long filler cigars fit into the premium category.
During the boom years of the mid nineties there were numerous
exotically named handmade long filler cigars which definitely
didn't deserve the appellation "Premium" - it was said
there were more "Don" names in cigar catalogues than
in the Spanish telephone directories.
On
the other hand some short filler cigars should be described as
"Premium". The names "P G C Hajenius",
"De Heeren van Ruysdael", "Justus van Maurik"
certainly come to mind. Cigars made from 100% pure tobacco - binder,
filler and wrapper.
The most
famous of these brands, P G C Hajenius, is available on the South
African market.
Founded in 1826 the company from Holland has always concentrated
on quality in the selection of tobaccos from Sumatra, Brazil and
Havana for their blends, and the best machinery to make their
cigars. Their extensive range of sizes offers cigars for all occasions
and customers' preferences.
The packaging is quality too - a fitting presentation for these
superior cigars.
It is said that P G C Hajenius represents the pinnacle of
the short filler cigar.
If you were
at the June Cigar Dinner you will remember the Kleine Tuitknak
from P G C Hajenius and how well received it was. If not, and
you didn't buy the Cigar Dinner 3-pack, you will have the opportunity
from October 2 to October 15 to try 3 of these "premium"
short filler cigars in the larger sizes for only R145.00.
All 3 cigars received 5 stars from Theo
Rudman - we quote his comments:

Grande Finale No.1 152mm x Ring 42
Traditional Hajenius blend with an extra measure of Havana and
Brazil.
"Coffee Aroma and flavour. Well bred cigar. Fit for Connoisseur.
To follow a meal."

Grande Finale No.2 127mm x Ring 41
Traditional Hajenius blend with an extra measure of Havana and
Brazil.
"Rich creamy flavours and spicy aroma. Smooth. Definitely
for the Connoisseur."

Slim Corona Sumatra 149mm x Ring 33
Sumatra wrapper; filler mostly Indonesian, with a touch of Havana
and Brazil.
"Full-bodied. Soft and spicy. A satisfying smoke. For
me, a bit long in relation to the thickness."
