Torpedo Trio Selection

Actually what was called a Torpedo shape when I started in business is now called a Pyramid.
I have called this the selection the Torpedo Trio – for old time’s sake (and because it rhymes).
The naming might have changed, but the shape and smoking quality haven't.
Easy in the mouth, the flavour and body are gentle over the broad burning area, and gradually grow in intensity as the cigar narrows.
It has always been understood that the cigar is technically difficult to roll. The basic difficulty comes in tapering the 50/52 ring size foot down to a pointed head without interfering with the free flowing draw. Only the most highly skilled rollers can achieve this, hence the scarcity of the cigar, the exceptional quality - and the high price.

Blending: Cuban cigars must be made in Cuba of only Cuban leaf. Different blends are achieved using leaves from different plantations, different parts of the plant, and different methods of curing and aging. Cigar Masters outside of Cuba achieve their blends through careful selection of leaf from plantations all over the world – wrappers from Cameroon, Ecuador, Connecticut; creamy leaf from the Dominican Republic; full-flavoured leaf from Honduras or Nicaragua. And just like good wines, leaf from each area has its distinct character – “the provenance of the tobacco is fundamental to its character”.
Compare two of these innovative-blend pyramid cigars with a classic Cuban pyramid: the smoothness, the flavour and strength, the appearance, the construction and burning qualities.

The South Africa Regional Edition Cuban Punch Petit Piramides 2010 (127mm x Ring 50)
Classic shape – classic Cuban.
Produced exclusively for distribution in South Africa this series is part of the regional distribution programme which Habanos started in 2005 with 5 Edición Regional. These are special limited-production cigars made for specific regional markets, underwritten by the distributor in the particular market, and available for 1 to 2 years. The shapes (vitola) are ones that are normally made in Cuba, but not in the specific brand.

Quorum Torpedo (152mm x Ring 50). Not quite a classic pyramid, it requires less skill to roll.  Founded in 1895, J.C. Newman Cigar Co. also manufactures such quality cigars as Diamond Crown and Cuesta Ray. Their Quorum is a top quality cigar packed in bundles at an extremely affordable price. Manufactured in Nicaragua, the filler is a blend of Nicaraguan, Dominican Republic and Honduran leaf, with a wrapper from Ecuador. The coastal region of Ecuador has one of the best climates in the world for wrapper leaf. The soil is rich in minerals and natural components; the temperature is mild; and cloudiness gives a natural cover that helps to grow bright, soft and elastic leaves.
Smoke Magazine gave Quorum cigars a remarkable 9.2 out of 10 in the Spring, 2007 issue.

Cuesta-Rey Centro Fino Sungrown Pyramid No.9 (165mm x Ring 52)
Stanford J Newman is one of only 6 members of Cigar Aficionado’s Hall of Fame. He discovered the now famous Cameroon wrapper. However, for this cigar, cigar-maker Carlos Fuente used a Sungrown wrapper from the Centro Fino part of the Sumatra-seed tobacco plant grown in the fertile Quevedo region of Ecuador. This combined with 5-year old, specially aged, Dominican ligero filler tobacco gives a “Dominican” cigar with a well-balanced, fuller-bodied flavour.
